LGBTIQ Detainees

The project LGBTIQ Detainees – Strengthening the Rights of LGBTIQ Detainees (2024-2025) focuses on the specific and under-explored issue of LGBTQI detainees, the challenges and discrimination they face, and the respect for their fundamental rights during their detention.

The project is coordinated by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Fundamental and Human Rights (Austria), in collaboration with the Centre for European Constitutional Law, the Antigone Organization (Italy) and the Hungarian Helsinki Committee (Hungary).

Specifically, the project’s actions include:

  • Mapping the existing legal framework and policies governing the rights of LGBTQI detainees, their implementation in practice, and their compatibility with international and European standards.
  • Identifying challenges and good practices regarding detention conditions, treatment, and care for LGBTQI detainees.
  • Facilitating and strengthening knowledge exchange between stakeholders and professionals.
  • Raising awareness and building capacity.

The project covers all EU Member States, with a particular focus on the four participating countries (Austria, Greece, Italy, and Hungary), where more in-depth national research and consultations will be conducted.
